Building classic desks is not an easy to do task and the fact is that there are not that many manufacturers that build them today. Those that still build roll top desks have the secret that their parents gave to them. It is something that is passed from generation to generation, from father to son...

I have asked one of those artists furniture manufacturers how they managed to learn this:

My father taught me, he was a furniture manufacturer himself. He didn't make a big secret out of it, but he revealed me a lot of "secrets" over time, information that helped me build furniture that withstand the test of time. The secret is the fact that you cannot just teach somebody to build such furniture in a few days, by giving him some guidance, you need to spend years and years working with such a professional before mastering the job. This is how I have done it!

Today, with all the furniture being made fast and with cheap materials, plus that it needs to be built light to be easily moved from one place to an other, it is not easy to lean these techniques and secrets anymore, since nobody spends time building them anymore, everybody buys materials almost in a ready to be used state and just cuts them and put them together. It seems that there is no difference between a baby exersaucer and a furniture piece.

I ask myself how long will rolltop desks will still be available in such conditions?

When I first started this website about roll top desks I thought it is going to be easier, but it is not! Getting information and pictures and all the data I need to feed this site up is not an easy to do task, that is for sure! There are many roll top desks and you really need to understand the essence of everyone of them, in order to explain the differences.

A few days ago I have been faced with the situation where one of my customers asked to buy a desk for his daughter. Custom desks, painted and refurbished, for children

Di you ever see painted rolltop desks? It is very interesting to see them. They don't have the color of wood but they are colored to whatever color the manufacturer wanted.

I have seen a few a couple of weeks ago in a small store, made by a local manufacturer taht wanted to make a few fun to watch desks for children. I can tell you that the one that I was immediately in love with was a blueish one with a lovely tint.

That piece of furniture was the most beautiful I have ever seen and nothing compared to it. There was also a green one there that was very appreciated by the audience and at the same time by the manufacturer himself who was very connected to it, said it was an old refurbished roll top desk of his grandparents that he managed to bring back to life after a long and hard work.

Most of all, I was amazed to see how many children were in love with these products and with their colors. The green one and the blueish one were the two main items children looked to. I wish I could take one home, but being custom made, the price was not quite cheap.

A few days ago I have payed some thinking to the furniture my grandparents had at home and you know what really came to my mind? The old roll top desk that my grandfather had on his office. My grandfather was a teacher, an old school teacher and this old roll top desk was the piece of furniture he loved the most.

At one moment, after my grandparents passed away, the furniture was moved to an old warehouse and I think that the old rolltop desk was moved there too. I think that the best thing I could do is to go and see if I could find it among all those old stuff. I loved that piece of furniture, it smells old time from all the joints. I love the wood and the tint and everything that comes with it.

If I well remember, I had an old photograph of my grandparents with my father beside that desk, and this photo was on top of it, in my grandfather office. I asked him once about that picture and he told me about it, about when it was made and about the roll top desk too. Seems that it was purchased in the same day my father was born, so it has a particular value!

I am going to look for it in the next days! For sure!
